Visit a conservation area this summer!

June 2017

While the Lakehead Region Conservation Authority (LRCA) encourages exploring Conservation Areas year-round, it should come as no surprise that we think summer is the most spectacular time of year to visit an Area. Warm weather, green foliage, singing birds and glorious sunshine all add to the already fantastic experience you’re likely to have in one of our Conservation Areas.

The LRCA owns, operates and maintains eight recreational Conservation Areas: Cascades (which is our most popular and well-used Area), Mission Island Marsh (best view of the Sleeping Giant!), Hazelwood Lake, Hurkett Cove, Cedar Falls, MacKenzie Point, Silver Harbour and Little Trout Bay. Additionally, we offer two publicly-accessible Forest Management Properties that are also popular destinations for outdoor recreation: Mills Block Forest and Wishart Forest.
Conservation Areas are popular spots for many outdoor activities, most notably hiking, photography, geocaching, birding (Mission Island Marsh and Hurkett Cove are both top-notch birding sites), on-leash dog walking and nature appreciation.

The LRCA also hosts a variety of public events, education programs and workshops throughout the year. Visit our website at www.lakeheadca.com and sign up for our newsletter. This will keep you up to date about upcoming events and other information regarding programs like our Tree Seedling Assistance Program. If you’re a teacher or youth group leader, you’ll also find information about how to book an education program with us!

The LRCA is also on social media. We are very excited to be on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Look us up on all three platforms using @lakeheadregion! Not only are we sharing interesting facts, beautiful photography, events updates and other important information, we will be issuing our Flood Forecasting messaging via Facebook and Twitter. We highly recommend following us if you reside within the Lakehead Watershed so you can remain in the loop when there is riverine flooding occurring (or likely to occur).

If you are a regular visitor to our Conservation Areas, you may be aware of our Explore Card Parking Pass. This pass entitles the bearer to free, unlimited parking at all of our Conservation Areas and publicly-accessible Forest Management Properties for one year. Funds raised through the sale of Explore Cards, along with funds from the coin boxes located at some of our Areas, goes directly towards the upkeep, maintenance and development of our Conservation Areas.

We rely on this support from visitors to our Areas, and hope that you may consider purchasing an Explore Card. They are available on our website or at our Administrative Office located at 130 Conservation Road in Thunder Bay.

We look forward to a fun summer this year. Get out and Explore!
