Thunder Bay Athletes Excel at the World Multisport Championships

September 2017

Thunder Bay’s John Power and Phil Brown participated in the Multisport World Championship Festival in Penticton at the end of August.

Power finished 82nd out of 891 competitors and 20th in his age division. Power’s event included a multisport Swim (3km), Bike (120km) and Run (30km), while Brown did the cross off-road triathlon which included Swim (1.5km), Mountain Bike (31km) and Trail Run(8km). Brown placed 30th of 213 male competitors and 4th in his age division.

Speaking with Power a day after the race he was a little sore but happy with his result and he shared his preparation for an event of this magnitude. “I’ve been spending anywhere from 6 - 12 hours a week on my bike, including the winter months where I rode my bike in the basement with the rear wheel attached to a trainer. I’ve also been running 30 - 45 miles a week. The only thing I’m not a big fan of are the early morning swims at the LU pool. Swimming is a challenge for me and it’s my weakest link in the triathlon, so the hours in the pool are a necessary feature of my training plan if I want to improve, “admitted Power.

For Brown, he was pleased with how his race went. “Biking was easily the most difficult for me. I pre-rode the course twice before the event and I struggled with the course but overall, it really was a special day for me. I am proud to have qualified to make the team and happy to have done as well as I could against the fastest competition I’ve ever seen, “ said Brown.

Congratulations to these gifted Thunder Bay athletes. Approximately 3,500 athletes from around the world competed during the 10-day event.
