Celebrate the season

Winter brings seasonal celebrations and enjoyable gatherings. Fort William Historical Park is just the right place to be for everyone big or small to experience the joys of the season, from fantasy fables of Christmas to holiday revelry to recreational fun.

To get into the Yuletide spirit, Rogue Productions is offering its perennial favourite, a theatrical rendition of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, happening December 9th to 11th and December 15th to 18th. Everyone will delight in the enduring tale of Ebenezer Scrooge, Tiny Tim, and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future. This heart-warming production has been a seasonal staple since 2002.

Tickets are $15 adults and $10 for seniors and students. Performances begin at 8:00 p.m. in the Great Hall.

Holiday happenings continue with the New Year’s Eve Family Frolic, Saturday, December 31st. Festivities run from 6 to 10 pm, with a colourful array of indoor and outdoor activities. Outdoor fun includes a sliding hill, a skating rink (bring your skates!), snowshoeing (snowshoes provided), bonfires, heritage games, and lively main stage entertainment. Indoors, you will find a variety of craft activities and children’s performers. Put your creativity to work in competing for prizes in the “Crazy Hat” contest. The Victoria Inn will be serving hot chocolate and tasty snacks and refreshments.

Capping off the evening is the spectacular and always popular fireworks show at 10 pm that allows families to enjoy an early but exciting New Year’s celebration before heading home to tuck the young ones into bed.

New Year’s Eve admission is at the door. Adults $10.00, seniors and students $8.00, kids age 6 to 12 $8.00, and free for children age 5 and younger. Cash, credit cards, and debit cards are welcome for admission. Advance tickets are available at the Visitor Centre.

Artisan workshops are also available at the Fort in February and March 2012. Participants work in small groups under the tutelage of experienced artisans to produce unique heritage items and learn creative techniques. Workshops include weathervanes, wall sconces, appliqué beadwork, machine sewing basics, Ojibwa snowshoes, cedar buckets, tin storm lanterns, dream catcher earrings, moccasins, birch bark baskets, and quillwork. These creations make for distinctive gifts and mementoes that are both decorative and functional for the home.

More seasonal fun is in store during the Voyageur Winter Carnival, happening February 18th-20th, 2012. A variety of outdoor recreational activities will be happening along with competitions and contests for all ages ranging from log sawing to snow shovelling.

Bookings for conference facilities and education and community group programs are also available year-round.
