The 2017 Skate Canada Northern Ontario Sectional Championships are coming to Thunder Bay.
This competition is a qualifying event for skaters in the Pre-Novice, Novice, Junior and Senior levels in all disciplines, training for an opportunity to move on to a national competition. We are beyond thrilled to have been chosen to hold this event in Thunder Bay. Knowing our ‘northern geographic location’ we knew our bid had to be spectacular. For our sport, it covers from Huntsville, North Bay, Timmins, Sudbury to Kenora and everything in between. We are expecting approximately 60 skaters in all the disciplines to compete in November.
Our city has competitive skaters from both the Fort William and Thunder Bay Figure Skating Clubs who will be participating to earn a spot on the
Skate Canada Northern Ontario Team heading to the national Skate Canada Challenge being held in Montreal this year. Currently the Skate Canada Northern Ontario Novice Ladies Champion is Jessica Etreni, 15, from
the Fort William FSC and she will be competing to defend her title.
Jessica's goals this year include making it back to Challenge but also to the national championships, "Canadians', being held in Ottawa in January 2017.
Other competitors from the Thunder Bay FSC are Lauren Puumala, 17, Junior Ladies; Taylor o’Brien, 16, also Novice Ladies; Kendra Knott, 14 and Amy Lee Brough, 14, Pre-Novice Ladies, Grace Jewett, 13, Juvenile Ladies (Under 14) and Mary Furlong-Kelly, 10, in Pre-Juvenile Ladies. Puumala and o’Brien both went to Skate Canada Challenge last year, along with Etreni. These 7 young skaters have been training hard at spring and summer schools. They will only have a one week break before school, all working to achieve a spot to move forward. Our hometown will be out in full force to cheer on these talented athletes.
Schedules will be posted on both Fort William and Thunder Bay Figure Skating Club Facebook sites. Come and see the Skating Stars of the Future, November 4-6, at the Delaney Arena.
