Many who golf know the name Sue Wright-Cassan as volunteer and President with the Manitoba Golf Association. You may also know that she is an active contributor and certified coach of the First Tee development program, fundraiser for junior golf and all-round supporter of the game. And now she has received the Lori Kane Community Leader Award, having made a significant impact in her community with a volunteer resume that spans over 20 years including Golf in Schools, Summer Camps for Kids and Try Golf Day.
Last year, Wright-Cassan was awarded a 20-year volunteer certificate in recognition of her involvement with course rating in Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario. And if that was not enough, she most recently qualified to compete in the Canadian Senior Women’s Golf Championship in the Super Senior category.
The Lori Kane community award is named after LPGA golfer Kane. Since 1996, she has had four career victories and ninety-nine top ten finishes on the tour. She won the Bobbie Rosenfelt Award in 2000 and became a member of the Order of Canada in 2006. Annual submissions for her award come from all over Canada and is selected by a committee that includes representatives from Golf Canada, the Golf Canada Foundation, honoured members of the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame, industry representatives, and the Golf Journalists Association of Canada.
What you may not know about Wright-Cassan is that she is also an avid curler, sporting her new stick most days during the winter in a sport she has played for some time. She is also a recognized wood artisan as part of Artisans Northwest juried exhibitions and dedicated to the growth of the organization as part of its executive.
While many volunteer in one capacity, Wright-Cassan continues to put a wide web around our region and always looks to support any positive contribution to the city she calls home. This includes supporting many events that Thunder Bay hosts by providing expertise, labour and about anything that needs doing.
“Pitching in comes naturally to me,” says Wright-Cassan. “I am very dedicated to the game of golf specifically and the promotion of our junior program in and around our region. Whether recreational or competitive, this game teaches skills and discipline that are useful as we move to adulthood. And of course, it is a lot of fun.”
Sue is married to Jim, and they live in Oliver Paipoonge where you will see Sue’s snazzy sport car parked in the driveway. You can see her zipping around town with her golf clubs propped in the front seat most summer mornings.
