Cambrian Players strives for an inclusive, accessible space

March 2024

Cambrian Players, Thunder Bay’s longest-running community theatre group, is approaching their 75th season which will kick off this fall. The theatre has always been run purely by volunteers who are passionate about the art of theatre.

Over the past 70+ years, Cambrian Players has presented over 200 mainstage plays, numerous Improv shows, and has recently added a Green Room semi-rehearsed play reading series to its offerings. During their 2022/2023 season, they had over 100 volunteers contribute to welcoming over 1,500 patrons into their audience to enjoy a piece of community theatre.

They are currently in the midst of their Spotlight on Inclusivity Campaign which they are hoping will help them to reach their fundraising goal of $150,000. The funds will be used to help add an access lift and main-floor washroom to their theatre space on Spring Street.

After bouncing from rented space to rented space for decades, Cambrian Players purchased their first facility in 2017, a historic building – formerly the Polish Hall on Spring Street. While the building is a functional new home, it requires retrofitting to be accessible for all our patrons and volunteers.

“Making theatre accessible to Thunder Bay is really important to us,” says Nathalie Roy, President of the Cambrian Players Board of Directors. “By improving access to our building, we hope to welcome even more audience members to enjoy our performances and provide a safe space for guests and volunteers alike.”

The Cambrian Board of Directors is passionate about ensuring that all audiences can come out to enjoy the magic of theatre.

Their 75th season mainstage line-up will be announced before summer kicks off in earnest, and you can expect a big year for the theatre group as they celebrate this milestone anniversary.
